Bring a bag and a loose idea of what you might cook. Leave a little room for whatever catches your eye. A Saturday market is one of the few errands that can comfortably become the outing itself: buy something useful, find something delicious and have a conversation that was not on the list. Grand Final plans can wait until you have worked out what is going in the fridge.
Where to point your feet
Ballarat Farmers Market’s published schedule is the second and fourth Saturday of each month, from 9am to 1pm at North Gardens Reserve, Zoo Drive, Lake Wendouree. Saturday 26 September is the fourth Saturday. The organiser lists coffee, food vans, fruit and vegetables, baked goods, eggs, honey and pantry products, alongside non-food stalls. Individual stallholders and stock vary; think of that as an invitation to browse, rather than a promise that a particular favourite will be there.
Build lunch as you wander
Our suggested challenge is simple: choose the ingredients for one easy lunch, then one thing you would not normally buy. Ask a stallholder how they use it. Take a cooler bag if you plan to purchase chilled food, and sort out how you will get it home before extending your morning. There is no need to turn a relaxed browse into a marathon. One good loaf, one useful ingredient and something to share can be a very respectable result.
A little space before the big game
If you are heading to a Grand Final gathering, the morning offers a chance to do something local before the afternoon takes over. If football is not your thing, give the market the time you would otherwise have given the television. Meet a friend at a specific spot, keep your plans flexible and check the forecast before choosing what to wear. A long weekend does not have to involve a long drive. Sometimes a full market bag and an unhurried morning are quite enough.
