Make the gardens the main event
Established in 1858, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens occupy a 40-hectare site on Lake Wendouree’s western shore. The central gardens bring together a fernery, conservatory, mature trees, flower beds and marble statues. Start with the garden map rather than trying to follow every path. Choose two things you want to see, then leave time for the things you notice between them.
A different display through the year
The Robert Clark Conservatory has a changing programme of floral displays, including begonias in autumn and chrysanthemums in May. Council warns that the conservatory closes for changeovers and maintenance. Ride a piece of everyday history
The Ballarat Tramway Museum is at 100 Gillies Street North within the gardens precinct. Its collection includes Horse Tram No. 1 from 1887. On operating days, museum admission includes unlimited tram rides as well as access to the displays; the tram journey is a 3.2-kilometre return trip. It is a chance to connect a familiar landscape with the transport that once served the city.
Plan around the museum’s operating days
At the time of checking, the museum lists Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday opening, with additional public-holiday and Victorian school-holiday sessions. Confirm the exact day, hours and fares on its visitor page before leaving. A garden visit does not depend on a tram operating, so keep the ride as an optional addition.
