Choose the outing before the route

A visit to Lake Wendouree can be as small as a walk to the water or as ambitious as a complete circuit. Decide how much time and energy you want to spend before setting off. For a short visit, choose one starting point and retrace your steps; that avoids discovering halfway round that you have committed to a longer walk than you wanted.

The circuit, or a slice of it

The City of Ballarat lists the Steve Moneghetti walking track as a six-kilometre circuit. The lake also has playgrounds, public toilets and barbecue facilities. That gives you a few different outings in one place: a purposeful walk, a family stop or a picnic. If you are meeting friends, nominate a specific landmark rather than simply agreeing to meet “at the lake”.

Look across the water

There is sporting history here as well as scenery. The lake’s 2,000-metre rowing course hosted rowing events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. It remains a competition venue, so your quiet afternoon may also bring a chance to watch boats from the shore. Check the council’s event information when planning around a particular date.

A little planning makes it easier

Council describes the path as mostly flat, with two short slopes, and notes that the north and north-east have less shade. Its accessibility information covers parking, toilets and path surfaces. Read that detail for your own needs; a general description cannot account for every mobility aid or changing condition. Pack water, check the weather and choose a comfortable turnaround point. If the walk is enough, let it be enough. There is no prize for filling the afternoon.
